A Letter from Laura's father, Edward Kim

    Dear Kip and Laura,

After many months and many nights of brainstorming with Mom (Grandma?), we have finally came up with a beautiful middle name for baby Emma -- "Kyungsun."

This means Virtue ("Sunn") of Jewel ("Kyung") and is a name derived from Laura's Korean name, "Eun-Kyung" and Kip's Korean name, "Pok Sunn Ki". You will recall that when I constructed our family tree last year, I selected Kip's Korean name (based on Chinese characterizations) as Pok Sunn Ki (Potter Stanley Kip), which means "Lucky Virtuous Knight."

As I thought about Korean names more and more, I realized that the name of a child can have significant consequences. Henry "Hyun Seok" means "Wise scholar", Laura "Eun-Kyung" means "Silver Jewel", and Helen "Una" means "Graceful Doll" -- the names accurately represent the three of you children, as you turned out to be just as we had hoped.

I hope and am sure you will like both Kip's and baby Emma's Korean names and will remember and talk about this naming long time after your mother and I have returned to our heavenly Father's home "paradise".

Although it is Asian/Korean tradition that the grandchildren's name should be chosen by an elder (great grandfather or grandfather), and even though you may not be fully aware of such a tradition, we are very grateful that you asked us to select your baby's middle name, a reflection of your desire to preserve your heritage with the raising of your baby. It is a great pleasure to be part of naming your daughter, our first grandbaby.

We love you and pray for your health and happiness.

    Mom and Dad
